Iceland’s famous tagline is “The land of fire and ice”. You only have to look at the name or take a quick look at Iceland on a map to understand the ice part, but what about the fire? The fire is of course Iceland’s many and very active volcanoes, one of which has erupted annually since 2021.

On March 16, 2024, an eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula for the seventh time in three years. As with previous eruptions in the area, this eruption is not expected to pose any threat to air traffic. 

The area in question was evacuated and closed off to traffic. With six previous eruptions in the past three years in this area, the uncertainty is now mainly focused on the infrastructure in the immediate vicinity.
