Beautiful Boutiques and Endless Sunshine in Madrid

The capital and largest city of Spain with nearly 3.5 million inhabitants is a haven of sunshine, culture, architecture, art and all the culinary joys you can imagine. Madrid is also a mecca for shopaholics with its many outdoor markets, shopping streets, colorful boutiques and high-end designer stores. And then there’s the history, the palaces, the world-famous museums and the royal family, not to mention the city’s most passionate love affair with football (soccer). Honestly, what’s not to love about Madrid?

Strolling around the pedestrian-friendly Madrid, you’ll soon get a sense of this city’s grandeur, its many grand renaissance buildings and the endless variety of commerce and culinary culture. Must-see tasting delights should include the rich tapas tapestry of Madrid and the many fresh food markets and food halls, such as the San Miguel market.

For the ultimate Madrid experience, head to Plaza Mayor square and marvel at this vast open space surrounded by glorious stately buildings that hail from the early 16th century. Be sure to check out the famous murals by Carlos Franco on the façade of Casa del Panadería, stroll around the arcade, grab a proper sangria, sketch the old man on the table next to you and write a sonnet about pigeons.

Fun Museums and Magnificent Artwork

Speaking of quintessential Madrid, get a tapas to go and have a picnic in the amazing Sabatini Gardens to enjoy its perfect view of the Royal Palace. For an ambitious shopping excursion, visit the Salamanca neighborhood and trek its streets filled with warehouses, designer shops and department stores but if you’re in the mood for a more low-key stroll in a charming and quirky setting, perhaps La Latina is more your style. Full of boutiques and cafés, this area is a joy any day of the week, but we recommend checking out the El Rastro market on Sundays for a true treasure hunt.

Fun-loving connoisseurs can divide their designated museum time between the Museo Nacional del Prado, home to one of the world’s finest collection of art, and the recently opened Museum of Illusions, a real treat for young and old who enjoy a little mind-boggling excursion. The latter is filled with optical illusions, interactive exhibits and real treats for the eyes, but then again, the same can be said for the wonderful city that is Madrid.
