Stockholm, Sweden is a city made up of 14 islands connected by more than 50 bridges over the Baltic Sea. The vibrant, energetic capital of Sweden is home to just under 1 million nationals, and sees more than 1.8 million tourists annually.

If you find yourself in Sweden’s largest city, there will be no shortage of sites and locales to dazzle you. From the fairytale-esque architecture to renowned museums and a bustling culinary scene, there is plenty to explore during your time there.

The 7 Best Things to Do in Stockholm

Stockholm isn’t short on must-sees, so you’ll have no problem crafting an itinerary that takes you all around this charmingly cozy and welcoming city. The best things to do in Stockholm include dining at some of its famous restaurants, marveling at some of its best museums, and getting in touch with some of Sweden’s breathtaking natural wonders.

1. Embark on a Historical Tour at the Vasa Museum

Stockholm houses the only ship from the 17th century left in the world: The Vasa. This Swedish warship is a sight to behold, built in 1626 by the order of King Gustavus Adolphus. Unfortunately, poor construction caused it to sink less than a mile after setting off on its maiden voyage in 1628.

The resulting wreckage spent 333 years under the sea until it was recovered in 1956. It’s been housed at the museum since 1988, and it’s undergone masterful restoration that makes it one of the most incredible historical artifacts you can behold.

2. Watch the Sun Set Over Lake Mälaren

Wander through Old Town and head to the Monteliusvägen cliff path for a stunning evening view as the sunset paints Sweden’s skies with miraculous hues of blue, orange, and pink. September through March is the best time to see the Northern Lights, which are most visible between 6pm and midnight.

Be sure to wear a good jacket and grab some coffee from one of the local coffee houses nearby, so you can stay warm all night.

3. Take a Tour Through City Hall

Stockholm’s city hall was constructed over 100 years ago, and it offers daily guided tours to visitors for 110 SEK (approx. 10 USD). If you consider yourself a history buff, you’ll love being guided through the building’s official areas while being taught all about its history and interesting facts about the city.

While you’re there, stop by the City Hall Shop to snag a custom souvenir, like a postcard, picture book, glass art, or seasonal exclusive items.

4. Go for Saturday Brunch at The Greasy Spoon

Swedish breakfasts are relatively simple, usually consisting of muesli, breads, cheese, ham, and yogurt. On the weekends, however, you’ll find the brunch scene in Stockholm becoming much more indulgent.

The Greasy Spoon features all-day breakfast, brunch, and drinks. Munch on a brunch staple, like avocado toast and fresh fruit, or grab a full English breakfast (vegetarian and vegan options are also available).

Make sure you also leave room for the house granola, served with peanut butter, blueberries, and bananas over yogurt. Granola is a Scandinavian staple, and you’ll get a great taste of this Swedish essential at The Greasy Spoon.

5. Indulge in Fika

Fika is a Swedish custom where people gather to share laughter and conversation over cake and coffee. You’ll have no shortage of options when it comes to location. Whether you prefer something low-key and cozy or youthful and artsy, there are dozens of welcoming cafés throughout Stockholm.

Traditional fika is a cinnamon-bun-style cake served with hot black coffee. You can do fika alone or with friends. What really matters is taking the time to pause, unwind, and replenish yourself with a sweet treat and some delicious, freshly brewed coffee.

6. Soak in Relaxation at Sturebadet

Saunas are customary for Nordic countries, and as such, you’ll find many enticing spas throughout Sweden. Sturebadet is centrally located, making it ideal for tourists that want to relax and unwind without traversing too far from the action.

With a sprawling pool, fitness center, jacuzzi, and plenty of spa treatments, you can get the ultimate R&R experience in a luxury facility that first opened in 1885.

7. Spend an Afternoon at Fotografiska

Fotografiska might be a small museum, but don’t let that fool you. It’s renowned as one of the world’s most important and unique photography curators, and it has a unique spin — there are no permanent works.

A rotating collection means that visitors are always in for something new and exciting. Specializing in contemporary photography, Fotografiska spans over 2,600 square feet and has around 25 exhibitions on display at any given time. Round off your visit with a stop by the museum’s built-in café, featuring sweeping panoramic views of Stockholm.

Don’t forget to grab a print from the art shop, or a photo book by some of the world’s most famous and emerging photographers.
