The Wonderful Country of Wales

What if there was a cosmopolitan city that also had a friendly, local vibe where everyone spoke English with a quirky accent and a friendly attitude? Well, there is and it just so happens we fly there! Our friendly destination Cardiff is a vibrant city of just under 400,000 people and the capital of Wales (not to be confused with “whales” – That’s an entirely different thing but we got your back there as well). Wales, for those that flunked geography, is a country of roughly 3 million people, in the west part of the island of Great Britain and is part of the United Kingdom. The official language of Wales is Welsh but don’t worry, everyone speaks English, and the currency is the GBP. You might think of Wales as something to do with the British Royal Family, which is correct, as the male heir to the throne bears the title of the Prince of Wales. But it is also so much more.

Great Activities in the City of Cardiff

Cardiff really is a very friendly and walkable city. Cardiff isn’t big but has plenty of unique attractions that we highly recommend. And luckily for the budget traveler, many of them are completely free. Chief among them and one of the most visited attractions in Wales, is Cardiff Castle. This medieval castle dates back to the 11th century but was built on the site of a Roman fort dating back to the 3rd century, the ruins of which are still there. The castle itself is incredibly picturesque and walking around the grounds is free but admission to the buildings is definitely worth the small fee, because inside you’ll see stately rooms and beautifully ornate decorations. Don’t miss out on exploring the keep which offers incredibly views of the city surrounding it. We highly recommend a guided tour to learn about the history of the site and get a deeper insight into the historical culture of Wales.

Bute Park is adjacent to Cardiff Castle and well worth the stroll as this public park is both big and beautiful. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic after roaming the castle grounds and odds are your Instagram account will be a big hit that day. Walk a little further and you’ll find another lovely public park called Sophia Gardens which is both a beautiful green space in the city as well as a famous international cricket stadium. When in Wales, do try to get to know this quintessential British sport along with the ultimate ball game: rugby. You’ll find all the rugby you could dream of at Millennium Stadium, home to the Welsh national rugby team and the largest rugby stadium in the country of Wales.

Be sure to visit the Museum of Cardiff for an added perspective into the past, present and future of this friendly city. It doesn’t hurt that admission to the Museum of Cardiff is free. The National Museum of Wales is also a wonderful free activity and provides an insight into the history of Wales as well as some beautiful artwork.

Don’t miss out on Cardiff Bay, a vibrant and colorful area full of fun shops, venues and eateries and the views of the harbor area are well worth the walk from downtown Cardiff.

But even if you skip the main sights and attractions and just walk around the arcades in central Cardiff, you’ll be sure to have a wonderful time, shopping in quirky boutiques, colorful markets and finding hidden treasures and charismatic moments.

Be sure to look into day trips from Cardiff to see some of the world-famous countryside Wales has to offer. And there are many more exciting destinations outside of the capital, such as St Fagans National Museum of History, Caernarfon Castle, Pembroke Castle (yes, lots of castles indeed) and Bodnant Garden.

All in all, Wales (and Cardiff is no exception) is an affordable destination full of culture, history, quirky characteristics and friendly locals.
