Carbon offsetting so far
Carbon Removal is an integral part of our sustainability strategy along with CO2 reduction and circular economy principles. We have gone through a rigorous process in selecting carbon credit projects and set clear and strict criteria when choosing a portfolio of carbon credits. Part of our sustainability initiative is both transparency in our processes and bringing awareness to sustainability. We are so happy to see our passengers take the initiative to offset the carbon footprint of their flights. The importance of offsetting and permanent removal
Sustainability strategies are a great indicator of how much companies are now engaged with reversing climate change. The Paris Agreement, which came into force in 2016, set out a global framework to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. Although reduction of CO2 emissions is a great initiative, it is insufficient for achieving net zero if not combined with CO2 removal. Carbon removal enables us to compensate for unavoidable carbon emissions and remove the existing CO2 from the atmosphere. Carbon removal is an integral part of corporate sustainability strategies along with CO2 reduction and circular economy principles.
There are different ways of removing carbon, and each method comes with a different price. While nature-based solutions such as planting trees are a cheap and effective method for mitigating climate change, the CO2 captured is stored for a shorter period of time when compared to other methods, such as biochar.
With the three portfolios PLAY offers through Klimate, passengers have the opportunity to compensate for their flight emissions with methods that store CO2 for hundreds of years.
Offsetting in numbers
139,11 mt CO2 have been removed, which is equivalent to 7 Airbus A320neo flying from Keflavik International Airport in Iceland to London Stansted.
The following shows the distribution of the portfolios chosen to remove the carbon emissions:
● 77% of the CO2 removed is coming from forestry projects and blue carbon.
● 14% of the CO2 removed is coming from a combination of forestry, blue carbon, biochar and bio-oil projects.
● 9% of the CO2 removed is coming only from more permanent carbon removal technologies such as bio-oil, biochar and blue carbon.
The amount of emissions removed is constantly growing since we launched this project.
